Rory McIlroy has been revealed as one of six sportspeople to have been shortlisted for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023. In a year where he won just two tournaments, both of them on the much-depleted DP World Tour, the world’s second highest ranked golfer must have been a bit surprised to find his name on a list that also includes cricketer Stuart Broad and jockey Frankie Dettori, two titans of their respective sports that bowed out this year after registering some of the best performances of their careers. Still, it’s a measure of McIlroy’s high bar that…
Louis Oosthuizen held off compatriot Charl Schwartzel to end a five-year wait for his tenth DP World Tour title at the weather-affected Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek Golf Club in South Africa. After 12 previous appearances, Oosthuizen admitted that this event was one he “really, really wanted” as he closed out a two-stroke victory on Monday with a dramatic par save at the final hole. The South African, who had been three ahead with three to play, missed a short putt at the 17th and then found the water off the tee at the 18th, which forced him to…
Former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker clinched the Legends Tour order of merit by winning a thrilling MCB Tour Championship at Belle Mare Plage in Mauritius. Baker led Adilson da Silva by 264 points going into the finale but the Brazilian pushed the 56-year-old from South Staffordshire until the last hole of the season before he secured the MCB Race to Mauritius. Baker made four birdies in his last six holes to card a third 67 of the week for a 15-under-par total, and seal a one-stroke win over 64-year-old Peter Fowler and Swede Patrik Sjoland, who picked up the…
Finland’s Kalle Samooja, Zimbabwe’s Kieran Vincent and Japan’s Jinichiro Kozuma survived a pressure-packed 36 holes on Sunday at LIV Golf Promotions to earn entry into the 2024 LIV Golf League. Samooja produced the lowest score of the marathon final day at Abu Dhabi Golf Club at 8 under, fuelled by a morning round of 7-under 65. Vincent and Kozuma each shot 7 under on the day to make a three-man playoff for the final two spots that also included Laurie Canter. Vincent birdied the second playoff hole and Kozuma parred it to join Samooja as LIV Golf’s newest members. “Once…

As we consider today’s R&A and USGA announcement against recent feedback provided by the World Alliance of PGA’s and the PGA TOUR, we are also concerned that the golf ball rollback overly impacts golfers and does not fully reflect the input of those closest to the game. There have been requests to align on what data is used and how it is used to draw conclusions prior to any equipment changes being made. Many important stakeholders do not see distance as a problem the way the governing bodies do, and therefore come to differing conclusions about how to proceed to…
The distance that a golf ball can travel is to be reduced under a new ruling that will come into play in 2028 for tour professionals and 2030 for all other golfers, including club amateurs. The new ruling, the full details of which were announced by the R&A and the USGA on December 6, will see a new test introduced that will reduce the distance that the longest hitters on tour can currently hit the ball by up to 15-20 yards, but will also reduce the distance that all golfers can achieve, albeit by a much smaller percentage. Under the…
