It’s party time on the PGA Tour, and this time it will be a pre-Super Bowl bash at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. The elevated PGA Tour event tees off Thursday, and the final round will end just a few hours before Super Bowl 57 kicks off in Glendale. All of the world’s available top golfers will be teeing off, including 22 of the top 25. No. 1 Rory McIlroy returns from dominating the DP World Tour, and reigning WM Phoenix Open champion Scottie Scheffler is back at the site of his first PGA Tour victory. Jon Rahm, who has won four times in his past six starts worldwide, and 2022 Phoenix Open runner-up Patrick Cantlay also are among the many stars in the WM Phoenix Open 2023 field.
McIlroy is the 8-1 favorite in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest 2023 WM Phoenix Open odds, with Rahm (17-2) just behind him. The rest of the WM Phoenix Open 2023 field is bunched up further back, with Xander Schauffele (14-1), Scheffler (15-1), Collin Morikawa (18-1) and Tony Finau (18-1) also among the favorites. Before making any 2023 WM Phoenix Open picks, be sure you check out the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from SportsLine golf insider Patrick McDonald.
After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour. McDonald takes a measured approach to his outright selections and is having a profitable 2022-23 season. He nailed the Farmers Insurance Open, backing Max Homa (25-1) as his top choice. The expert also just missed a massive 130-1 score at the Sony Open when Hayden Buckley finished as runner-up. He hit another 25-1 shot at the Houston Open, taking Tony Finau to win.
McDonald is up almost 29 units this season, meaning a profit of nearly $2,900 for $100 bettors. McDonald also has been on the money on his matchup plays and cashed in huge on Brendan Steele (80-1) as the first-round leader at the Zozo Championship. The expert finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on his outrights, including a monster 250-1 payout on Hudson Swafford at The American Express. Anyone who follows McDonald’s advice has been cashing in big.
Now, McDonald has studied the 2023 WM Phoenix Open field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all of McDonald’s PGA picks and analysis.
Top 2023 WM Phoenix Open expert picks
Justin Thomas has had a lot of success recently at TPC Scottsdale, but McDonald is fading the former world No. 1 this week. “While he has thrived here in previous appearances, Thomas is currently a shell of his former self,” McDonald told SportsLine. The 29-year-old hasn’t finished higher than 25th in his three official events this season, and his most recent top-10 finish in a full-field event came at the Canadian Open last June. Thomas ranks 102nd in total driving, 180th in strokes gained putting and 149th in scoring average, so McDonald won’t be looking in his direction.
On the other hand, McIlroy won that Canadian Open to start a run of 12 top-10 finishes in his past 14 events. It was the first of four victories over that span, including one in his most recent PGA Tour event, the CJ Cup. And he comes in off a victory in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour two weeks ago. The Northern Irishman has seven straight top-five finishes. He has gone 76-under par over his past five on the DP World Tour. McIlory tied for 13th in his only appearance at the WM Phoenix Open in 2021, shooting 65 in his final (and most recent) round. You can see who he is backing this week at SportsLine.
