Golf Ireland have announced the arrival of the iconic Claret Jug to golf clubs and communities across Ireland as part of ‘The Road to The Open’ initiative.

The two-week tour, which began last Friday at an event in Newtownards, County Down, will visit clubs and groups across the island of Ireland, ahead The 153rdOpen at Royal Portrush in July.

The trophy will visit clubs and communities within Down, Dublin, Kildare, Offaly, Roscommon, Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary, Limerick, Galway, Mayo, Armagh, Antrim and Donegal during its journey around the island.

Golf clubs hosting the Claret Jug will each enjoy a 90-minute event, providing attendees with an opportunity to take photographs alongside one of golf’s most historic trophies.

Golf Ireland’s Club Support Officers and local Golf in the Community Officers will be in attendance, while clubs are creating inclusive and engaging opportunities to build excitement and community spirit around their visit.

“We are thrilled to partner with The R&A to bring the Claret Jug, one of the most revered trophies in sport, directly to communities around Ireland,” said Golf Ireland CEO Mark Kennelly.

“This a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the passion for golf across the island of Ireland and to promote community engagement as The Open returns to Royal Portrush.

“Events like these highlight the vital role golf clubs play in connecting communities and creating a lasting legacy. The return of The Open is a significant moment and Golf Ireland aims to maximise its positive impact, inspiring future generations of golfers.

“Through ‘The Road to The Open’, we are looking to create excitement across clubs, schools, and communities, ensuring its impact resonates far beyond the tournament itself.”

The Claret Jug was also on show at the Golf Ireland AGM in the Crowne Plaza Blanchardstown, last Saturday as it continues its journey. The next two weeks will offer clubs and communities the chance to come together around one of golf’s great traditions.

“This tour is part of Golf Ireland’s broader commitment to grassroots engagement and supporting our clubs,” said Golf Ireland Director of Development and Club Support Vincent Foley.

“We are particularly excited about community engagement elements like virtual reality golf experiences, putting simulators, and other interactive activities our teams may deliver at these events, making golf accessible and fun for all.

“The Claret Jug Tour, coupled with our extensive school and community programmes, signifies Golf Ireland’s commitment to growing the sport, ensuring a lasting legacy from The Open and driving more golfers to our clubs.”
