Golfers we encounter always seem to think they “aren’t good enough” to get fit for golf clubs.
But one of Asia’s best fitters disagrees.
It’s a question we get a lot at GOLF: Do I need to get lessons first before getting fit?
On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, host Johnny Wunder asked Eric Chung of Impact Golf in Malaysia whether he thinks he can fit a player before they’ve had golf lessons.
“It’s such a good question because it’s such an unknown,” Chung said. “But for me, I think a good fitter could go on back to what you said before. Understanding where they are, looking at the hand-eye coordination, just seeing what their movements are like, you can sort of semi-predict where they’re going to sort of evolve to, or potentially in terms of speed, in terms of dynamics, etc.
“And I just think you can almost get something that is very comfortable and they can build into while they develop their swing with lessons.”
Wunder goes on to explain that he believes that things like lie angle can be the only adjustments as a player begins to develop their game more.
Chung agreed but said not everyone necessarily would.
“Maybe your lead guys on tour might say something different, but for me, you’re completely not wrong there,” Chung said. “But I’ve seen so many times where you can build out, you can pull out the old shafts, put it into a different head. And there’s such tiny little, tiniest little detail differences. And it just completely feels completely different.”
