Golf has been played for generations. Players abide by golf traditions, sometimes centuries-old, pretty much every time they step out on the course. In this blog, we delve into some of…
After shooting an opening 66 at the Chevron Championship in Texas on Thursday, American golfer Lauren Coughlin has a first-round lead for just the second time in her career. Coughlin went bogey-free with three birdies on the front nine and three on the back nine on the first day of the tournament. She hit 14 of 18 greens, recorded 10 one-putts and needed just 26 putts overall to get through her first round. “I think my husband and I had a really good game plan, and I wasn’t trying to be too aggressive out there. Just trying to take a…
World number one Nelly Korda insists she is taking nothing for granted as she bids to secure a remarkable fifth straight win and second major title in the Chevron Championship. Korda took a seven-week break after winning her first title of the year, the LPGA Drive On Championship, in January, and returned to win three events in the space of three weeks, including beating Ireland’s Leona Maguire in the final of the T-Mobile Match Play. The 25-year-old is the first woman to win on four consecutive starts since Lorena Ochoa in 2008 and is also the first to enter a…
Words: Phil Casey Matt Fitzpatrick believes his game is heading in the right direction as he bids to defend his RBC Heritage title. Fitzpatrick defeated Jordan Spieth in a play-off at Hilton Head last year to win his first regular PGA Tour event, the 2022 US Open champion making a birdie at the third extra hole after the pair had finished tied on 17 under par. Spieth missed two excellent chances to successfully defend a title for the first time in his career before Fitzpatrick sealed victory in stunning fashion as the pair returned to the 18th for the third…
Rory McIlroy has dismissed a report that he was on the verge of a shock move to LIV Golf. London financial paper City AM reported at the weekend that McIlroy, who has been among the staunchest critics of the Saudi-funded breakaway, could be about to jump ship in a deal worth USD850million (£680million). McIlroy’s manager Sean O’Flaherty told the Irish Independent the report was “fake news” and the world number two was asked about the claim ahead of this week’s RBC Heritage. RUMOURS “I honestly don’t know how these things get started,” McIlroy said in an interview with Golf Channel…
The Dane, who led Europe to victory in Paris in 2018, will reprise the vice-captaincy role he served under Donald’s leadership for last year’s triumph in Rome. Bjorn’s reappointment was confirmed by Donald on Tuesday and comes after Italian Edoardo Molinari was also re-engaged ahead of the contest in New York. Donald hopes the continuity will serve Europe well as they bid to win in the United States for the first time since 2012. DONALD HAPPY Donald said: “I am very excited to have Thomas back on the team. Once I was appointed as captain again, my thoughts quickly went…
Scottie Scheffler has hailed the influence of English putting guru Phil Kenyon after claiming his second Masters title in the last three years. Scheffler compiled one of the best ball-striking seasons ever seen in 2023, his adjusted scoring average of 68.63 being the seventh-lowest in PGA Tour history and the best by anyone not named Tiger Woods. In total Scheffler was ranked first in nine different categories, including greens in regulation and strokes gained off the tee, but was ranked 162nd out of 193 players in putting. TURNING TO KENYON That prompted the world number one to turn to Kenyon…
Former champion Danny Willett admits he is tempted to accelerate his planned return to full-time action following an impressive comeback in the Masters. Willett had feared he would be sidelined for at least a year following shoulder surgery in September last year but recovered sufficiently to return to the scene of his 2016 triumph and carded a superb opening 68. The 36-year-old was also level par for 17 holes in extremely difficult conditions in Friday’s second round before an untimely triple bogey on the 18th, but comfortably made the halfway cut and went on to finish in a tie for…
While Tiger Woods’ days of competing for Major titles look to be a thing of the past, judged on his last-place finish at the Masters of those that made the cut, the 48-year-old looks destined to play an important role off the course next year after he confirmed last week that he is talks to take on the job of US Ryder Cup captain for the next two matches. It has always been assumed Woods would lead Team USA at Adare Manor in Ireland in 2027, however, the PGA of America has also given the 15-time major champion the opportunity…
Scottie Scheffler fully justified his status as pre-tournament favourite with a nerveless second Masters title in the space of three years at Augusta National. The world number one carded a closing 68 to finish 11 under par and four shots clear of Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg, with England’s Tommy Fleetwood, two-time major winner Collin Morikawa and Max Homa three strokes further back. Scheffler held his nerve as his rivals stumbled around Amen Corner and responded magnificently when Aberg kept the pressure on, the 24-year-old again demonstrating his enormous potential on his major debut. Aberg only turned professional in June last year,…
