Rory McIlroy’s bid to win a fifth major title will stretch into another decade after he suffered his second worst performance in the Open Championship. Five weeks after his heartbreaking loss in the US Open, McIlroy added a second round of 75 to his opening 78 at Royal Troon to finish 11 over par, a single shot better than he managed at Muirfield in 2013. The world number two admitted he started thinking about his holiday plans after his outside chance of making the cut disappeared when he covered the first six holes in six over par, including a triple-bogey…
Blackrock House, a property which sits in the middle of Royal Troon Golf Club’s Old Course, venue for this week’s Open Championship, has been brought to market by sales agent Strutt & Parker for a guide price of £1.5m. The semi-detached 3-bed property enjoys panoramic views of the historic links, and sits between the 2nd and 16th holes, and directly behind the 18th tee. Annabel Blackett, who manages Strutt & Parker’s Country House Department in the North & Scotland, said: “The sale of Blackrock House is one of those rare times where you can safely say there isn’t anything else like…
Shane Lowry made a flawless start to his bid for a second Open title as Rory McIlroy effectively wrote off his chances of doing the same at Royal Troon. Lowry carded five birdies in a bogey-free 66 that was only surpassed at 9.33pm by England’s Daniel Brown, the world number number 272 returning a brilliant 65 to claim a shock lead on his Open debut. Brown, who won his maiden DP World Tour title in Northern Ireland 11 months ago, took advantage of calmer conditions for the later starters to birdie the third, fifth, 10th, 11th, 16th and 18th. It…
Tiger Woods cut a frustrated figure as he laboured to an eight-over-par 79 in the first round of the Open at Royal Troon on Thursday. The 15-time major winner rolled back the years when he holed a long putt for a birdie at the third but he fell away badly thereafter in a round that featured six bogeys and two doubles. The 48-year-old’s efforts were also partly overshadowed by comments from TV commentator Mark Roe about his physical condition during his struggles on the Ayrshire links. Tiger Woods endured a frustrating first day at the Open Woods’ difficulties since being…
Europe captain Luke Donald believes Robert MacIntyre’s stellar Ryder Cup debut gave him the belief he can “handle anything”. MacIntyre won two and a half points from three matches in Rome last year, including a singles victory over US Open champion Wyndham Clark, as the home side regained the trophy in emphatic style. The left-hander has since won his first PGA Tour title in the RBC Canadian Open and produced a stunning finish to win the Genesis Scottish Open title on Sunday, just days before the 152nd Open gets under way at Royal Troon. “It’s been extremely special to win…
Former champion Justin Leonard got the 152nd Open Championship under way at Troon in overcast and breezy conditions. The 52-year-old, who has an exemption for another eight years as a result of his victory here in 1997, has not appeared in a major since the Open was last in Ayrshire in 2016 as he now plays on the Champions Tour. Before the first shot at 6.36am there was a moment of reflection for Ivor Robson, the official Open starter for more than 50 years, who died in October and whose family were present on the tee. Rory McIlroy is looking…

A new study shows that golf is the hardest professional sport to predict a winner, when compared to other individual sports over the past 20 years, including tennis, snooker, badminton and squash. Results found that from 2004-2024, winners of a Major golf championship were more likely to have had a lower world ranking (WR), when compared to champions in other individual sports. The average world ranking for golf’s winners was 18, the lowest amongst all sports tested. Tennis served up as the next most unpredictable sport, as results analysed from the same period found that winners of major tennis tournaments…
Darren Clarke became the oldest Open champion since 1967 on this day in 2011 when he won by three shots at Royal St George’s at the age of 42. The Northern Irishman shot an even-par 70 on the final day in Sandwich to hold off the challenges of American duo Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, who had both produced strong showings on their front nine. Clarke kept his cool to finish on five under par at the Kent course and clinch a first-ever major victory, having held the lead since the second day. Success at the Iberdrola Open two months…
In a typically feisty pre-Open Championship press conference, 15-time major champion Tiger Woods played up his chances of adding to his major tally and played down any talk that it might be time for the 48-year-old to hang up his clubs and preserve his legacy Glad to see you back here at The Open competing once again. How much are you looking forward to this test at Royal Troon? TIGER WOODS: I’m really looking forward to it. I didn’t get to play it last time I was here. Looking forward to the challenges. I know they’ve gone around here a…
