Brian Huggett, the Welsh golfer who played in six Ryder Cup matches and finished second in the 1965 Open Championship, has died at the age of 87. A statement issued on behalf of Huggett’s family said that he had died in the early hours of Sunday morning after a short illness. Porthcawl-born Huggett won 16 European tournaments during his career, and was Europe’s top golfer in 1968. Wentworth Club has unveiled plans to renovate its 100-year-old East Course and build a new golf academy and par-3 course. The 6,200-yard East Course at the renowned Surrey venue was designed by Harry Colt and first opened for play in 1924, two years before the more famous West Course, venue for this week’s BMW PGA Championship, was built. Stoke Park, which has been largely closed for the last three years, is welcoming back golfers to play its historic Harry Colt course for the first time since the venue’s change of ownership. The Buckinghamshire-based luxury hotel, golf and country club shut its doors to members in 2021 after it was bought by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, who has since invested heavily in the 300-acre estate. Kent’s Kipp Popert won his third consecutive G4D Tour @ BMW PGA Championship title with a stunning four-shot victory at Wentworth on Tuesday.
