Jordan Spieth, defending champion Hideki Matsuyama and Tom Kim headline the field for the 2023 U.S. Open, set to tee off Thursday at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. Spieth is playing in the tournament for the first time since 2019 and is one of 19 golfers in the Sony Open 2023 field who competed last week at Kapalua. Matsuyama and Kim also are among that group, and Kim and Tom Hoge come over off top-five finishes in Maui. Matsuyama rallied from a five-stroke deficit with nine holes left to match Russell Henley at 23 under par last year. He then hit a 3-wood from 276 yards to within 2 feet to win with eagle on the first playoff hole.
Kim is the 10-1 favorite in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest 2023 Sony Open odds, and Sungjae Im (21-1), Matsuyama (15-1) and Spieth (16-1) aren’t far back. Brian Harman (16-1), Corey Conners (20-1), Hoge (20-1) and Henley (22-1) are the only others shorter than 25-1 in the Sony Open 2023 field. The expert finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on his outright plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship. Top 2023 Sony Open expert picks
Spieth is one of the big names in the field and among the top choices of oddsmakers, but McDonald is fading him this week. Accuracy off the tee is critical at Waialae, and that isn’t Spieth’s strength. Only one player had a lower percentage of fairways hit at Kapalua last week than Spieth’s 51.7%, and he was 150th on tour in that category last season (56%). That will make it tough for him to contend on the tight Honolulu layout, and his approach game and putting won’t save him. Spieth last played this course in 2019, when he missed the cut.
Meanwhile, McDonald knows Kim deserves to be among the favorites on a course he says “should be an ideal statistical fit.” The 20-year-old is known for his accuracy off the tee and to the green and is putting well. His precision should pay off on a course where doglegs make positioning critical, and he ranks 46th in strokes gained putting. The all-around game has earned him four top-25’s in four events – three in the top 11. One of those was his Shriners victory.
