Your golf grips are the only connection between you and the club. Even the best grip can’t perform at its highest level if it isn’t properly cared for. Fortunately, keeping your grips in great condition only takes a few minutes and can extend their life while helping you maintain consistent control on every swing.

Store Your Clubs in the Right Environment

One of the biggest factors affecting grip life is temperature.Whenever possible, store your golf clubs indoors in a climate-controlled environment. A garage, basement, or inside your home is much better than leaving them in the trunk of your car.

Avoid Excessive Heat

High temperatures can dry out the rubber and accelerate the breakdown of grip materials. Leaving your clubs in a hot car for extended periods can cause grips to become hard, slick, and lose their tackiness much faster.

Avoid Extreme Cold

Cold temperatures won’t damage grips as quickly as heat, but repeated freezing and thawing can make rubber less flexible over time. Cold grips also feel firmer and can reduce comfort and traction during play.

Clean Your Grips Regularly

Dirt, sunscreen, sweat, and oils from your hands gradually build up on your grips, making them feel slippery.

To clean your grips:

  • Mix warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap.

  • Use a soft brush or cloth to gently scrub the grip.

  • Rinse with clean water.

  • Dry thoroughly with a towel before playing.

For golfers who play regularly, cleaning your grips every 5–10 rounds helps maintain their original feel and traction.

Don’t Forget to Dry Your Grips

If your clubs get caught in the rain, wipe the grips dry as soon as possible. While modern grips are designed to handle moisture, storing wet clubs in your bag for long periods can lead to mildew, unpleasant odors, and unnecessary wear.

Inspect for Wear

Over time, all grips wear out. If your grips feel smooth, shiny, hardened, or require you to squeeze the club tighter than usual, it’s probably time for a replacement.

Most golfers should replace their grips every 40–60 rounds or about once a year if they play frequently.

A Small Investment That Pays Off

Proper grip care improves traction, comfort, and confidence on every shot. By storing your clubs in a moderate climate, cleaning your grips regularly, and replacing them when they wear out, you’ll get the best performance from your equipment and your game.
